8-Year-Old Girl Shot Dead During Backyard Birthday Party in Akron, OH

A little 8-year-old Ohio girl was fatally shot over the weekend at a backyard birthday party, according to police.

On Friday, Young Mikayla Pickett was shot in the back after gunfire broke out just before midnight in the Sherbondy Hill neighborhood of Akron, police said.

Willie Walker, 62, told the Akron Beacon Journal that he was holding a birthday party for his 15-year-old grandson.  The party was in his backyard when the shooting began.

“All hell broke out,” he said.

Three or four individuals showed up at the property and started shooting at members of the family and their friends who had been at the party, Walker said, who was inside the house when the gunfire started.

He said he didn’t know the little girl who died from her gunshot wound.

Police officers found a number of shell casings on the ground at the scene.

“I don’t know how many shells they took,” Walker said. “A lot of them.”

A neighbor, who declined to give her name, said a few windows had been shot out at the home of her son, who lives next door to her.

“I heard I don’t know how many shots,” she said.  Once it was safe to go outside, to see a lot of bodies on the ground, based on the amount of gunfire that was heard.

The neighbor noted that there was another shooting in the neighborhood during the week.  Apparently, someone shot into another house on the same street.   She discovered two shell casings in her driveway last week.

“These boys have lost their minds,” she said. “Nobody’s got that much sense to tell on them. It’s just sad.”

She mentioned people are afraid to tell police about the shooters, “and rightfully so, because they just don’t care.”

The neighborhood street, Roselle Ave, located between Manchester Road and East Avenue, is in the Sherbondy Hill section of the city,

It looks like a nice neighborhood, the kind that you would never expect this type of violence to happen.

Akron police track murders in the city, except for unintentional homicides. Mikayla’s death is the 31st murder that police are investigating in 2020.

Anyone with information on the shooters is asked to please call the Akron Police Department Detective Bureau at 330-375-2490 or 330-375-2Tip.

You can also call the Summit County Crime Stoppers at 330-434-COPS. Text TIPSCO with your tips to 274637.  If you call, you can remain anonymous.

As of Sunday there have been no arrests made yet..
