Just In: SDNY Charges Steve Bannon, Kolfage With Fraud Over Distribution of Funds Raised to Build Wall
The U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District announced this morning that former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon was arrested and charged, along with three others, with defrauding hundreds of thousands of donors who contributed to a fundraising campaign dedicated to the construction of a privately funded border wall.
The SDNY has assumed the Trump resistance center for legal action so make of this what you will until the facts are known.
As of now the SDNY alleges that Bannon, Brian Kolfage, Andrew Badolato and Timothy Shea defrauded donors of the online crowdfunding campaign known as “We Build the Wall.”
Bannon, Kolfage, Badolato and Shea currently face charges of one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering. Each charge carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years.
Acting U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss:
“As alleged, the defendants defrauded hundreds of thousands of donors, capitalizing on their interest in funding a border wall to raise millions of dollars, under the false pretense that all of that money would be spent on construction.”
“While repeatedly assuring donors that Brian Kolfage, the founder and public face of We Build the Wall, would not be paid a cent, the defendants secretly schemed to pass hundreds of thousands of dollars to Kolfage, which he used to fund his lavish lifestyle.”
According to the indictment, Bannon promised that 100% of the donated money would be used to build three miles of wall in South Texas. The SDNY alleges that the defendants collectively used hundreds of thousands of dollars in a manner inconsistent with that representation.
In the indictment that was unsealed earlier this morning, the USAO alleges that Kolfage “covertly took more than $350,000″ of the more than $25 million raised by the campaign.
The charge against Bannon… “(Bannon), through a non-profit organization under his control … received over $1,000,000 from We Build the Wall, which (Bannon) used to, among other things, secretly pay (Kolfage) and to cover hundreds of thousands of dollars in (Bannon’s) personal expenses.”
The indictment said they faked invoices and sham “vendor” arrangements, among other ways, to hide what was really happening.
We Build the Wall originally promoted a project for 3 miles of fence in South Texas .
In response to Congress stonewalling funding for PresidentTrump’s promised border wall.
We’ll have to see the evidence as it surfaces but the same players consistently bringing charges against Trump partisans raises the same question… will the coup attempts ever stop or are we correct in calling everything leftists do part of a permanent coup?
Media reports have, so far, avoided reporting that President Trump never embraced this effort. The White House actually distanced itself from “We Build the Wall.”
Maintain an open mind…
