BREAKING: Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Dead at 87
The Supreme Court has announced the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg at the age of 87. Ginsburg had waged a valiant battle against metastatic cancer for more than a decade but finally succumbed from complications associated with pancreatic cancer.
According to a statement released by the high court, Ginsburg passed at her Washington home. She was surrounded by her family.
Justice Ginsburg was generally recognized as the legal architect of the feminist movement, making her a lightning rod for both liberals and conservatives. She served 27 years on the high court.
Ginsburg’s death is likely to have profound consequences for the court and the country. Not only was she the leader of the four liberal justices on the court, but Chief Justice John Roberts no longer holds the controlling vote in closely contested cases.
Should President Trump be in position to name her successor expect the most contentious battle yet over her replacement. The potential to flip a seat previously held by the ultra liberal Ginsburg to one held by an originalist jurist would change the ideological slant of the high court.
In remembering Ginsburg Chief Justice John Roberts said;
“Our nation has lost a justice of historic stature. We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague. Today we mourn but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her, a tired and resolute champion of justice.”
