Things were going smoothly in the joint session of Congress … for about 10 minutes, until the votes from the State of Arizona were raised to be certified.  Then things quickly escalated.   Representative Gosar objected to the certification, Pence asked if any Senator concurred and that is when Ted Cruz stood up and objected.

This resulted in a standing ovation for Cruz, presumably from the Republican contingent in the chamber.

The Hill reported:

Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) objected to recording his home state’s Electoral College tally at a joint session of Congress on Wednesday, triggering a historic debate and votes in the House and Senate.

After there were no objections to the tallies in Alabama and Alaska, both won by Trump, Gosar rose to object to the Electoral College vote in Arizona, where President-elect Joe Biden won by 10,457 votes.

Vice President Mike Pence, who is presiding over the joint session, asked Gosar if his objection was in writing and joined by a senator, a requirement to trigger the debate and vote.

Gosar said it was and Sen. Ted Cruz(R-Texas) chimed in with his objection.

Republicans supportive of the move then stood to applaud Gosar.

One lawmaker from each chamber must agree to object to a given state in order to trigger up to two hours of debate and a vote.

After this vote, the two chambers of the legislature went back to debate and that is all hell broke loose …

Fox News reported:

‘Congress on Wednesday met to certify the Electoral College vote, but was forced to go into lockdown as the Capitol Building was stormed by protesters — leading to unprecedented scenes in the building.

Protesters from a pro-Trump rally descended on the Capitol, clashing with police and leading authorities to lockdown the buildings — and put the chambers into recess as lawmakers debated the certification of the Electoral College votes.’

A woman was also allegedly shot by Capitol Police:
