A Michigan Senate leader is the target of a leftish hashtag campaign on Thursday,  #ShirkeyResign, because he said something controversial when he was on a hot mic, and even after being pressured, he said he stands by ‘points I was trying to make.’

The Republican leader in Michigan’s state Senate said last week that the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol was a prearranged hoax and not the work of supporters of then-President Donald Trump.

“That wasn’t Trump’s people. That’s been a hoax from day one. That was all prearranged,” state Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey said of the riot.

“It was arranged by somebody who was funding it,” the Clarklake Republican continued. “It was all staged.”

The left is very angry with Mike Shirkey and,” Michigan @LtGovGilchrist blasts Sen. Shirkey for insurrection comments: “It is clear that his so-called apology was not heartfelt, nor did it come from a place of humility and understanding. Rather, it was an empty gesture made for political expediency.”

It is a huge story.

Detroit News reporter Craig Mauger posted on Twitter, “Just made a few attempts to ask Senate Leader Mike Shirkey for comment as he headed into caucus; he repeatedly responded, “Some time, we’ll catch up.” avoiding the topic.

The Detroit Free Press reported and said, “Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey, R-Clarklake, opened the floor session of the Michigan Senate on Wednesday morning with a prayer. He spoke of seeking unity, working together, and looking to God when people “get off track.”

But immediately after delivering the invocation, microphones in the Senate chamber caught the highest-ranking Republican elected official in the state standing by the sentiment of recent statements he made that aspects of the Jan. 6 insurrection. U.S. Capitol was a “hoax” and “staged.”

Occupy Democrats discredit Shirkey in the following video by reporting:

“I said some things in a videoed conversation that are not fitting for the role I am privileged to serve. I own that,” Shirkey said. “I have many flaws. Being passionate coupled with an occasional lapse in restraint of tongue are at least two of them. I regret the words I chose, and I apologize for my insensitive comments.”

Despite the apparently insincere apology, Shirkey was caught on a hot mic, essentially undermining his apology by saying that he didn’t actually retract any of the points he made, just the way he phrased them,” they reported.

In the following video, Republican Senate Majority Leader Shirkey said that the Capitol events on Jan. 6th look “staged” and that Republican Senator Mitch McConnell appeared to have “wanted to have a mess”.

“Just now, SML Mike Shirkey, on a hot mic on the floor of the Senate speaking to Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist: “I frankly don’t take back any of the statements I made — I take back some of the words I chose.” I need to wait for the recording to post for this session video to confirm this. Still, the Senator appeared to stand by the assertion that former President Trump supporters did not instigate the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. Full quote from SML Mike Shirkey: “I frankly don’t take back any of the points I was trying to make. Some of the words I chose I do regret.” Concerning the U.S. capitol riot: “The FBI is going to identify here within the next couple weeks which was actually behind it.” Worth noting the Lt. Gov. appeared to explicitly warn Sen. Shirkey the mic was on before they began the exchange, and Shirkey proceeded anyway.
