Chad Wolf, the former acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday, issued a warning to the Biden administration on the immigration crisis at the U.S. border, telling Fox News that President Joe Biden’s message to immigrants to stay home won’t work.

“At the end of the day, these illegal migrants don’t listen to government officials,” Wolf said. “They listen to other illegals who have gotten into the U.S. that call them and tell them that they are here, they are staying in the U.S., they are not being deported or removed to their home countries.”

More than 100,400 people attempted to cross the U.S. border in February, a 28 percent increase since January, according to Troy Miller, Acting Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

More than 9,400 of those stopped were unaccompanied minors, up from 5,800 in January, according to the New York Times.

Biden on Tuesday told ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos that his administration was sending people back.

“Do you have to say quite clearly, ‘don’t come?'” Stephanopoulos asked.

“Yes, I can say quite clearly: don’t come,” Biden responded, later adding, “Don’t leave your town or city or community.”

When asked whether it was a mistake to anticipate the surge, Biden said: “First of all, there was a surge in the last two years. In ’19 and ’20, there was a surge, as well.”

“This one might be worse,” Stephanopoulos noted.

“The idea that Joe Biden said, ‘Come’ — because I heard the other day that they’re coming because they know I’m a nice guy,” Biden said.

“Here’s the deal, they’re not,” he said.

Lawmakers say the surge is inundating their communities.

“You have all these small communities that are doing everything they can to stay afloat during this environment,” Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas.

“These communities along the border, in particular, are compassionate communities. Immigration is not a new topic to them, but the numbers that are coming across are record numbers,” said Gonzales. “Our Border Patrol agents are stretched thin; they need resources today.”

Wolf called the situation a “full-blown crisis.”

“Back in 2019 under President Trump we had messaging as ‘don’t come because you will not be let into the country,’” he noted.

“We know that the vast majority of these folks do not qualify for asylum, but unfortunately today we have a different set of messaging and a different set of policies in place which are encouraging, they are the pull factors that we see today, which is encouraging this crisis.”

Report: Biden Administration Places ‘Gag Order’ on Border Patrol Personnel as Crisis Grows

The Biden administration has reportedly placed an unofficial “gag order” on Border Patrol agents and sector chiefs as a surge of migrants swarm the southern border.

Four current and two former Customs and Border Protection officials said to NBC News that they have been told to deny requests for media “ride-alongs” with agents, and press officers have been told to send any requests for information to the press office in Washington for approval.

Agents responsible for keeping track of the number of migrants in custody have also been told to prevent leaks by not sharing their information. The officials said the restrictions and others like them are often referred to as unofficial “gag orders.”

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said Tuesday the agency is “on pace to encounter more individuals on the southwest border than we have in the last 20 years.”

“Across the federal government, certain employees are designated spokespeople for their respective agencies and public statements are vetted to ensure accuracy,” a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said.

“This standard and process has been followed at DHS since the Department’s inception and across bipartisan administrations. Customs and Border Protection continues to publicly provide the same monthly data on the same schedule as it has since 2014.”

The unofficial policy was reportedly passed down verbally, meaning some agents have released videos showing the state of the border without permission from Washington.

One video released by Rep. Henry Cuellar’s office over the weekend showed dozens of migrants crossing the Rio Grande on a raft. The Texas Democrat has been vocal in the past about his disapproval of President Joe Biden not visiting the border as it is flooded by migrants.

News organizations have also been denied access to or pictures of the overcrowded border processing facilities holding unaccompanied children, including the newly opened processing facility in Texas.

Data on the number of unaccompanied children in the custody of Border Patrol has been relatively protected in the past, but crackdowns on leaks have made it more difficult to collect the data.

According to one official, some access restrictions can be attributed to precautionary measures implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Trump administration allowed some media ride-alongs last year, but Biden has not allowed a single one since his inauguration.

“Part of maintaining the public trust is to communicate regularly and often,” a former official said.

An official during the past three administrations said the current situation is reminiscent of restrictions during the Obama administration.

“It was more restrictive under Obama than under Trump, when there was more autonomy for each region to speak to the media,” the official said.

Mayorkas earlier this month told reporters he intended to be more transparent as DHS secretary, including when it came to interactions with the media.

“Another principle to which I intend to adhere throughout my tenure, and that’s openness and transparency, and that includes the Fourth Estate,” he told reporters on March 1.
