A Florida high school football game was postponed due to a “COVID-19” outbreak.

No, it’s not 2020.

It’s 2023, and institutions are making COVID a thing again.

A game scheduled between Palm Beach Gardens High School and Vero Beach High School on September 1st was rescheduled due to COVID-19 cases.

The Palm Beach Gardens football team had over 30 players test positive for COVID-19.

The Palm Beach County School District issued this statement: “Out of an abundance of caution, the football game between Palm Beach Gardens High School and Vero Beach High School scheduled for Friday, September 1, has been postponed due to an outbreak of COVID-19.”

The has been rescheduled for Wednesday, September 6th at Vero Beach High School.

The Palm Beach Post reports:

After parents inundated the school with phone calls following that statement, the district revised its initial statement, dropping the mention of “outbreak,” to state it “received reports of cases or symptoms of COVID-19 on the Palm Beach Gardens High School football team. The decision was made to postpone the football game out of an abundance of caution to protect students.”

District spokesperson Angela Cruz Ledford said on Thursday that the district wants to “ensure the best football game is played on the field.”

“Thank you to District families for understanding the postponement of the football game between Palm Beach Gardens High School and Vero Beach High School,” Ledford said.

“Although we did not have enough players due to illness to face off as initially scheduled, the District wishes the Gators the best of luck next week.”

A source with ties close to the situation said 32 Gardens players were reported to have tested positive for COVID. The latest variant is known as EG.5, and nicknamed Eris, the Greek goddess of strife and discord. Eris is already the dominant coronavirus subvariant in the country, infecting more people than any other single strain.

This is the second Florida high school football game this year to be postponed due to a “COVID-19 outbreak.”

Trinity Catholic, located in Marion County, postponed its opener due to COVID-19 cases.

The Tallahassee Democrat noted:

Florida High’s week one football game Friday at Trinity Catholic has been postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak within the Celtics program, the team announced via Twitter on Thursday morning.

The statement on Twitter read: “It’s with great disappointment that we must announce this week’s game against Florida High has been postponed due to a COVID outbreak within the team.”

Florida High head coach Jarrod Hickman said the team will use this week as a bye week and shift the team’s focus to next week’s game against Ponte Vedra.

He said the news was disappointing for his team following a week of preparation.

“I think it’s disappointing for the kids, I mean those are the ones that are putting in a lot of hard work and a lot of time and the effort,” Hickman said. “It’s certainly a shock to your system when you prepare all week long and then we walk off the field late last night and get some news that wasn’t good.”

The game has been rescheduled to Sep. 29, previously a scheduled bye week for the Seminoles.
