Former NBA Player Files $40 Million Lawsuit Against Insurance Company Related to Myocarditis Diagnosis
Former NBA and University of Kentucky basketball player Michael Kidd-Gilchrist filed a $40 million lawsuit against insurance company Lloyd’s of London for denying his claim after being diagnosed with myocarditis.
The 2012 second overall pick reportedly experienced acute chest pain in December 2020 and was advised to stop playing basketball.
The former NCAA champion made a claim to the insurance company “for coverage under the policy due to permanent total disablement arising from a sickness,” according to his attorney, Jason Morrin.
“Yet, MKG claims that Lloyd’s ‘refused to fully insure the damage caused by the loss for which plaintiff sought coverage.’ MKG has not played in the NBA since 2020; he was just 26 years old then. As recently as June 26, 2023, MKG continued to show symptoms of chronic myocarditis,” Morrin said.

“Kidd-Gilchrist was diagnosed with Myocarditis in December of 2021 and still has shown signs of the heart condition in June of 2023 when he was last examined,” A Sea of Blue noted.
The lawsuit reportedly says he had COVID-19 twice.
However, reports do not mention if he received the experimental COVID-19 injection, which has been linked to increased rates of myocarditis and pericarditis.

Kidd-Gilchrist last played in 2020 inside the NBA Bubble with the Dallas Mavericks, but during that year, while he was working out, he started to feel acute chest pain, and due to his condition, he has had to quit playing basketball, according to the lawsuit.

Kidd-Gilchrist was just 26 when he last appeared in the NBA, and he says he felt symptoms of his heart disease as recently as June.
Morrin said the player paid “an annual premium on the policy averaging $66,125,” and the policy was in effect from Sept. 14, 2019 to Sept. 14, 2021.
Kidd-Gilchrist is suing the company for $40 million.
New York Giants offensive lineman Justin Pugh chimed in on the lawsuit, explaining why he never worked with the company.
“The reason I never used Lloyd’s of London is because you will most likely have to fight this case overseas. Multiple insurers took pieces of this. Logistical nightmare. This is why it’s important to get a policy with a US domiciled company,” Pugh posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Kidd-Gilchrist was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets and spent the majority of his eight NBA seasons with them. He was traded to the Dallas Mavericks during the 2019-20 season.
